One of Spain’s most beautiful villages is in Aragón – a medieval treasure frozen in time

Alquézar is a stunning village in Huesca, whose old town was recognized as a Historic-Artistic Site in 1982. Its exceptional location atop the Sierra de Guara, dominated by a castle, makes it an extraordinary place.

Alquézar, nestled in the province of Huesca (Aragón), blends breathtaking natural scenery with rich historical heritage. Known as the fortress of the Sierra de Guara, its name reflects its strategic position and unique medieval architecture. The town’s layout, declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1982, gives it a distinctive charm.

Despite its beauty, Alquézar nearly faced abandonment. By 1987, the population had dwindled to just 140, with 80% of the village in ruins. Mariano Altemir, who served as mayor for 32 years until the last local elections, told 20minutos that “Alquézar was on the verge of disappearing for three decades.” However, the village managed to bounce back, now listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain and recognized as one of the Best Tourism Villages in the World by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Today, “the town has around 300 registered residents,” says Altemir. The village now offers 16 restaurants, five hotels, three hostels, two campsites, and 50 tourist apartments.

Historical Center

At the entrance to the historic center, visitors are greeted by the impressive Church of San Miguel. Towering above the village is the majestic Collegiate Church of Santa María, declared a National Monument in 1931, standing out from any viewpoint.

Exuberant natural setting Seamlessly blending into its stunning environment within the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park, the area surrounding Alquézar (whose Arabic name means “fortress”) is ideal for hiking and mountain biking. Encircled by the majestic Vero River canyon, it’s also perfect for canyoning and climbing. Bird watchers will be thrilled with the variety of species that inhabit the region year-round.

A must-see for those interested in cultural, natural, gastronomic, or adventure tourism, Alquézar, in the Somontano de Barbastro region, offers a unique and unmissable experience for anyone visiting Huesca.
